2023 Chevy Colorado

A silver 2023 Chevy Colorado Z71 is angled left.

Named after one of the most adventurous states in the Union, the 2023 Chevy Colorado is the perfect pickup for drivers who want a brand-new Chevy truck that is more affordable than the flagship Silverado and its accompanying HD models. The Chevy Colorado is built for adventure--hence its name--and its performance, reliability, and versatility are proof of this. It is a familiar name in the automotive scene, and those unfamiliar with the details of the Colorado are at least familiar with the name and know who makes it. Although the Chevy Colorado is the least costly pickup truck in the manufacturer's legendary lineup, that doesn't mean it lacks power. The Colorado is a perfect choice for the daily driver, hobbyist, and occasional handyman.

The all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado is the best it has ever been, and even base-level WT trim now comes complete with a safety suite, tech features, and a turbocharged engine. Following the WT are the LT and Trail Boss, the latter of which is ripe for off-roading with a two-speed transfer case, all-terrain tires, more power, and 9.5 inches of ground clearance. The last two trims for the 2023 Colorado are the Z71 and the ZR2. If you're serious about off-roading, the ZR2 gives you everything you need, with large 33-inch tires, a suspension specifically tuned for off-roading, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and five drive modes you can choose from on the fly: Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, Terrain, and Baja.

Three New Turbocharged Engines

Any pickup you purchase should have power. Trucks are known for providing drivers with performance that matches their menacing size, and your pickup truck should be able to tow large amounts of cargo. The 2023 Chevy Colorado changes things up and replaces the three powertrains seen in prior models. The base engine has shifted from a 2.5L I-4 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission to a 2.7L Turbo I-4 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base 2023 Colorado engine has 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque, which is 18.5% more horsepower and 35.6% more torque than the 2022 model. Regardless of the performance increase, the maximum towing capacity remains at 3,500 lbs. However, the payload capacity has been increased from 1,435 lbs to 1,684 lbs.

Replacing the 3.6L V6 from preceding models is a 2.7L Turbo Plus I-4 engine, and the V6 engine's eight-speed automatic transmission carries over. With the new engine, Colorado models get 310 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque--nearly 42% more torque than the V6 engine. The 2.7L Turbo Plus also raises the maximum towing capacity to 7,700 lbs instead of the 7,000 lbs the V6 engine provided. This engine is standard on the Z71 and Trail Boss and is an available option on the WT and LT.

Some drivers will be upset to hear the diesel powertrain is no longer part of the Colorado with the release of the 2023 model. However, in its place is a 2.7L Turbo High-Output I-4 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission instead of the six-speed the diesel came with. The new engine still retains the same 7,700 lbs of towing the diesel-powered engine used to tow, but its 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque are far greater than the 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque from the diesel powertrain. This engine is standard on the ZR2 and available on the LT, Trail Boss, and Z71.

More Versatile Design

The Chevy Colorado is full of features. Chevy not only upgraded the 2023 Colorado's tech, but the 2023 model also includes the new StowFlex Tailgate. The StowFlex Tailgate is an extra cargo bay built directly into the tailgate. There are many use cases for this storage container, such as storing tools for the worksite, holding lawn chairs for special events, transporting food and snacks for tailgating, and more.

Speaking of tailgating, one of the things you can do with the StowFlex Tailgate is keep your drinks cold. All you have to do is fill the compartment with ice and throw in your cans and bottles. When it's time to go home, draining the water is as easy as opening the drain. The StowFlex Tailgate is one of many ways the Colorado goes above and beyond in versatility.

For comfort, you can opt for an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat on every available trim, including the WT, and it'll come standard on the ZR2. Your seats will either be made with cloth, Evotex, or genuine leather, and there are various colors to choose from, like Adrenaline Red with Jet Black, Artemis with Jet Black, and pure Jet Black. Available heated and ventilated front seats are accompanied by a heated steering wheel to keep you warm or cool as required.

Updated Technology

Inside the 2023 Colorado is an 11.3-inch touchscreen that replaces the seven-inch touchscreen that came standard in the 2022 model. The larger screen helps make towing easier as it offers a big display to view up to ten camera angles you can choose between. With the 2023 Colorado's infotainment center comes features like Bluetooth connectivity, Wireless Apple CarPlay, and Wireless Android Auto. Drivers interested in a more premium media experience can opt for the seven-speaker Bose audio system available on the LT, Z71, and Z72.

The Chevy Colorado also includes a range of standard and optional driver-assist features. With the purchase of any 2023 Colorado, you'll get Chevy Safety Assist--a suite of amenities including a Forward Collision Alert that works in tandem with Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking. Chevy Safety Assist also includes Intellibeam Automatic Headlights, a Following Distance Indicator that works harmoniously with Adaptive Cruise Control if you opt for it, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.

Dimensions

No Shortage of Space

Although the Colorado is a midsize truck, it isn't short on space. However, a change that separates the 2023 Colorado and the 2022 model is the new Colorado has one option for the bed: a 5'2" box. This 5'2" bed is more akin to the short bed from the prior year with its 41.9 cu.ft. of space. This also means the 2023 Colorado takes up less room than older Colorado models equipped with the discontinued long bed. The 2023 Colorado is 213 inches long and 78.8 inches tall. Regardless of any changes, the 2023 Colorado still offers enough space for most drivers to find room for what they're transporting, and the Colorado can always tow a trailer if you need more room.

Another change for the 2023 Colorado is making a four-door crew cab standard across the lineup. This means the 2023 model gives you and your passengers plenty of room. With one cabin choice, every 2023 Colorado can seat up to five passengers. You and your accompanying front-seat passenger will both have 40.3 inches of headroom and 45.2 inches of legroom. That's nearly four feet of room solely to stretch your legs, but what's even more impressive is the 57.4 inches of shoulder room and 54.7 inches of hip room.

In the back, where up to three passengers may be seated, there are 38.3 inches of headroom, which isn't too different from the front seat, so your taller family and friends will fit as well as you do. The amount of legroom in the back row is expectedly less than the front row, but it's still an excellent 34.7 inches of legroom, which again goes a long way for taller passengers. The back-row passengers also get phenomenal hip and shoulder space similar to the front-row, with 53.1 inches of hip room and 56.1 inches of shoulder room.
