Midsize convenience packed into a highly functional pickup is the best way to describe the 2022 Chevy Colorado. Plenty of features and lots of capability help highlight what you get with Chevy's midsize truck. For those who want an affordable vehicle that manages to be durable, comes with great towing capacity for its size, and offers a strengthened bed for functional cargo capacity, then the 2022 Colorado is the truck to go with.

New for the 2022 model year is the Trail Boss Package, which is available for the LT and Z71 trims. This package comes equipped with a suspension leveling kit that lifts the vehicle by one inch compared to the standard trims, and it also comes with undercarriage protection in the form of front and mid-vehicle skid plates. If you opt to go off-road, your Colorado is well-protected. Speaking of off-road, the Trail Boss is equipped with 17-inch ZR2 wheels, decked out in a black color scheme along with the Chevy and Colorado emblems. The Trail Boss Package rounds things out with the elimination of the front air dam, giving easy access to front red tow hooks, excellent for when you need the functionality while out in the wild.

The 2022 Colorado comes in four different trim formats, including the base WT trim, the LT, the Z71, and the off-road-ready ZR2. You can also have the Colorado outfitted with a number of different packages and customization features. Some of the features include five different color schemes that allow you to get the truck in Satin Steel Metallic, Summit White, Black, Sand Dune Metallic, and Bright Blue Metallic.

Performance

Three Powertrain Options

The 2022 Chevy Colorado is available in three different powertrain options, starting with the base 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder. This very fuel-efficient and capable power plant puts down 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. The 4-cylinder also manages up to 19 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

The 3.6-liter V6 gives you more horsepower and torque if you want more performance capabilities out of your Colorado. Sporting 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, you have lots of functionality at hand with the V6 while still managing great gas mileage at 18 miles per gallon in the city and up to 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

For a mixture of performance and fuel efficiency, there is the 2.8-liter Duramax turbocharged inline 4-cylinder diesel engine. This very capable turbo-diesel power plant gives the midsize pickup 181 horsepower and a massive 369 pound-feet of torque, making it an excellent option for those who want maximum power and utility out of the Colorado. The Duramax also manages a very respectable 20 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Transmissions and Transfer Cases

The Colorado's engines are mated to either a 6-speed automatic transmission for the 4-cylinder and Duramax or an 8-speed automatic transmission for the V6. Additionally, the vehicle can be configured either in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, depending on what sort of functionality you want out of the pickup. Most four-wheel drive versions of the vehicle come equipped with the patented Autotrac 2-speed transfer case, and you get maximum traction control out of all four wheels thanks to StabiliTrak.

Capacity

Competitive Capability

Being a midsize truck doesn't mean it's not capable of being competitive with full-size trucks. When it comes to the Colorado's towing capacity, it gives some of the bigger trucks on the market quite a challenge, especially when equipped with the Duramax turbo-diesel engine, which allows the Colorado to tow up to 7,700 pounds. This puts the Colorado's towing capacity on par with many full-size SUVs.

But one advantage the Colorado has over the full-size SUV market is its bed. Thanks to being available in short and long-bed configurations and having the option to configure the cab in a two-door Extended Cab or a four-door Crew Cab, you can pack a lot of cargo into the rear with no problem. How much cargo? Well, more than 1,500 pounds worth of payload, making it a true midsize work truck. With up to 17 tie-down points and an available power remote tailgate, you can get a lot of utility out of the Colorado's bed.

Ready to Work

With anti-lock disc brakes on all four wheels made standard across the line, plus hill descent control and hitch guidance on the Z71 and ZR2 trims, you have a truck that is ready to take on all sorts of tasks right from the get-go. The Trailering Package is also available, which comes with a 2-inch receiver hitch and 4-pin and 7-pin connectors, along with a 7-wire electrical harness and a 7-pin sealed connector. The package comes standard on the ZR2, along with locking differentials for extra traction control through improved torque distribution.

Interior & Tech

A Comfortable Truck

The good part about the Colorado is that even though it has a great deal of utilitarian equipment that comes standard or is made available for truck shoppers, it doesn't forego comfort. The Colorado can seat up to five people across two rows and offers up to 49.9-cubic feet of cargo volume with the available long box. This makes the Chevy pickup quite a good all-around pick for a number of different tasks, including basic back-and-forth transportation.

When it comes to passenger room, you have 41.4 inches of headroom in the front and up to 38.3 inches of headroom in the second row. With 45 inches of legroom up front and 35.8 inches in the second row, you still have plenty of room no matter where you sit inside the Colorado Crew Cab. You're also looking at up to 57.5 inches of shoulder room in the front and 56.2 inches of shoulder room in the rear, so you get lots of wiggle room, especially if you have kids packed in the second row.

All the Features You Want

The comfort amenities are also plentiful, with a 6-way power driver seat and a 4-way power front passenger seat. All-weather floor liners, illuminated visors, and interior lighting all help add to the comfort levels inside the truck. There's also leatherette seat trim, giving the Colorado an additional element of style for those who want it. Alternatively, the WT trim gives hard-working truck shoppers access to durable vinyl or cloth seat trim. And with a leather-wrapped steering wheel coming standard on the ZR2, you have a high-quality steering wheel to improve grip while infusing the interior with an additional layer of luxury.

Infotainment Features

The performance, convenience, and comfort within the 2022 Chevy Colorado are exemplified in a standard infotainment suite that is jam-packed with features. The Colorado comes with a standard 7-inch touchscreen and features a 3.5-inch diagonal driver information center featuring warning messages, vehicle health, and personalization settings.

For more robust profiles and media access, the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus System comes with an 8-inch diagonal HD color touchscreen featuring built-in support for Bluetooth wireless connectivity, audio streaming, and voice-activated control mechanisms. Both suites include integration for Apple Carplay and Android Auto, so you have access to your favorite media and apps inside the cabin. No matter which trim you go with, you have complete access to the features available with the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System.

Robust Safety Technology

With a robust safety suite featuring forward collision alert, lane departure warnings, and rear park assist, you have an amazing line-up of available features to keep you safe inside the Colorado. The added Teen Driver mode allows parents to keep report cards of their teenage driver's performance and provides automatic reminders and safety assistance to keep teen drivers safe and secure during their travels. From vehicle health and infotainment to safety and security, the 2022 Chevy Colorado is the complete package for those looking for a midsize pickup.
